Embrace lace!

It was a fine night in Cambridge as we gathered for our May meeting.

It was great to see all the Belles again. We each had the chance to suggest two ideas for meeting topics over the next twelve months. The choices were varied but the most popular included crochet, museum visit, wine tasting and a talk from Breckland Orchard owner, Claire Martinsen, on running a small business.

Looking forward to having fun with our Belles at the monthly meetings and also at our social events being planned be our social secretary, Zoe Brown. Cambridge events such as Strawberry Fair and the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival as well as cinema outings are all to come!

Our president, Joanne, welcomes the group

We were also fortunate to have a talk by the lovely Fran on lace-making. Fran is clearly passionate about the craft and enjoys everything about the process. She talked about the history of lace-making and gave us lots of useful info including the types of bobbins to buy if you’re a starter and the best natural thread to use. We also had a go and checked out Fran’s beautiful beaded bobbins – the favourite being the one with a mini hand clasping the beads. Thanks so much Fran!

Who knew there were bobbins out there worth £300?! We’re off to scour antique fairs!

Until next time…

Blue Belles committee meets up and eats cake!

The first meeting of the Cambridge Blue Belles WI committee got off to a great start this week. Aside from planning essentials for the setting up of our brand new WI, we chatted through options for our Blue Belles branding, monthly programme, social events and the all-important cake rota!

Many thanks to Sally and Fran, our WI advisors, for their invaluable advice in setting up our new WI and to Zoe for the tasty raspberry cupcakes!

At our next meeting on Wednesday 8 May we’ll be able to try our hand at lace-making, check out ideas for our branding and share thoughts for our next 12-month programme.

See you there Blue Belles!

Cambridge Blue Belles WI gets started!

We were so pleased to set up a new WI in Cambridge on Wednesday 10 April 2013!

We started by choosing a name, and one of our lovely members came up with the idea of Cambridge Blue Belles when she was watching the Cambridge/Oxford boat race on Easter Sunday. We unanimously agreed that this was a perfect name for a fresh group of Cambridge women keen to do something new!

Thirteen people signed up to join the committee and one person stood for President – Joanne Croxford.

We all enjoyed getting to know each other over a cup of tea and Sally’s tasty lemon drizzle cake.

Looking forward to seeing all the Cambridge Blue Belles at our next meeting on 8th May!
