Back at our October meeting, we discussed NFWI’s SOS High Streets Campaign.
Cambridge is fortunate to be fairing well in the current high street crisis, with one of the lowest proportion of empty shops in the country. Cambridge is also lucky to have a thriving independent shopping scene, and one that is growing all the time.
With this in mind, we Belles took the opportunity to pledge our support for independent businesses and share our top indie shopping tips. According to research by the Federation of Small Businesses, for every £1 spent at an indie, 50p – 70p feeds directly back into the local economy. When you spend your £1 at an out-of-town retail park, chain or online this figure is just 5p. Food for thought as you embark on your christmas shopping! And that’s not to mention the wealth of knowledge and passion you’ll find in independent shops – these businesses grow from the owners love of what they do.
A selection of our high street pledges:
“to buy my xmas presents from independent crafters/shops”
“use independent cafe’s more often, and start my christmas shopping at independent shops/stalls/markets”
“to get an organic local vegetable box every week”
“try to go to more independent restaurants”
“to only buy craft supplies from indies”
“to buy more food grown locally instead of going to Tesco!”
“branch out from Pret sandwiches”
“to have one meal a week with all ingredients purchased and sourced locally”
“to eat local produce and support shops that are a ‘co-op’”
“will only buy books from the local book shop”
“buy little and often at the greengrocers and butchers”
“only get coffee from independent shops, no chains”
“to visit cambridge market more, and the Farmer’s Outlet on Lensfield Road”
“3/50 Project: choose 3 indies and & spend £50 a month in those shops – supporting local industry and keeping some cash local”
“to use local butchers that provide locally sourced meat instead of supermarkets”
